The Masseria San Nicola was built by the De Salvo Family , who were already citizens of the town, in 1500. It was the residence of the prime minister” Borbonico” Liborio Romano. This is a typical Salento Masseria, fulcrum of the agricultural activity of the surrounding territory. The Masseria is formed by a central core of several rooms and along the sides of the building a few rooms that were used by the workers and the “massaro” as well as stables for the animals. The walls of the building are made of stones gathered from the surrounding land and are a meter in thickness. The vaulted ceilings are star or round barrel vaulted which have been left without plaster in their natural state.
Without changing the layout of the structure there have been renovated various one room living areas of different sizes each with a cooking corner and bathroom fully independent. The rooms have central heating and air conditioning and are equipped with wi-fi. The surrounding countryside is covered with olive, almond and fig trees as well as the always present prickly pear bushes.
Geranio Double-Three Bed Room
This two room living area has been renovated from a larger room with a small bathroom and cooking corner joining the bedroom. It was once used as a storeroom for farm tools The walls are built with local stone and there is a barrel vault stone ceiling. The interior was renovated in 2013. The room has independent central heating and air conditioning. It is a double room but an extra bed can be added on request.
Lavanda Double Room
His one room living area was once part of a larger room and has a small bathroom. There is a cooking corner. This room was once used as a store room for farm equipment. The wall are built of local stone. The ceiling is a stone faced barrel vault. The interior was renovated in 2013. There is independent central heating and air conditioning.
Ulivo Double Room
This living area is of new construction built on the ruins of an old stone bread oven. In 2013 the bathroom was renovated and a cooking corner was added. The room has independent central heating and air conditioning.
Nespolo Double Room
This living area is a new construction built on the ruins of an old stone bread oven. In 2013 the bathroom was remodeled and a cooking corner was added. The interior was also remodeled. The room has independent central heating and air conditioning.
Margherita Three Bed Room
This one room living area was once the home of the farmers that worked the land. During restoration a bathroom and cooking corner were added. The surrounding stone walls are original, built from local stones. There is a fireplace. The roof has been newly added and the interior renovated. There is a double and single bed. There is a hidden kitchen. The living area has independent heating and air conditioning.
Gelsomino 4 beds
This one room living area was once the home of the main farmer family “massaro” who kept the goats, sheep and cows that were raised in the masseria. This large room of local stone has a barrel vaulted ceiling and a fireplace. A new bathroom has been added. There is a small kitchen annex the living area. The interior was remodeled in 2013. There is a double bed and two single beds. The room has independent central heating and air conditioning.
